Penny’s Hill 2016 ‘Edwards Road’ McLaren Vale Cabernet Sauvignon has been awarded the trophy for Champion Cabernet Sauvignon at New Zealand’s top wine show.
In a strong international field, with more than 2,000 entries, Penny’s Hill entered three 2016 vintage McLaren Vale estate-produced red wines for three GOLD medals : Penny’s Hill ‘Edwards Road’ Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘Malpas Road’ Merlot and ‘Cracking Black’ Shiraz.
A passionate ambassador for the McLaren Vale region and a frequent winner of international medals and accolades, Penny’s Hill Group Winemaker, Alexia Roberts rates the win as an important achievement.
“To be acknowledged in such an august international competition as New Zealand’s largest and most prestigious wine show is outstanding,” she said.
“McLaren Vale’s climate is well suited to producing premium reds. Our ‘Edwards Road’ Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on a single, narrow-planted vineyard. It exhibits all the hallmarks of a premium Cabernet Sauvignon with great fruit weight and generosity, balanced by fine savoury tannins. This is a wine to truly savour.”
For Penny’s Hill founder and principal, Tony Parkinson, on hand in Auckland to collect the award, the win marks another step in the global success of the brand’s estate-produced McLaren Vale wines.
“This is a fabulous accolade. Alexia’s passion, talent and dedication have raised the international standing of Penny’s Hill to the highest level. And in a nation which produces many of the world’s great cool-climate wines, scoring a major red wine trophy for Australia, for McLaren Vale, is very satisfying."
Headed by veteran NZ wine identity, Bob Campbell MW, the NZ International Wine Show attracts a strong Australian and international contingent to show alongside the wines of New Zealand.
