It all begins in the vineyards. At Penny's Hill, we are committed to growing outstanding fruit to deliver the finest wines possible across our three vineyard sites.
PENNY'S HILL VINEYARD
On the foothills east of McLaren Vale, the original Penny's Hill Vineyard is narrow-planted to red varieties, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Slightly cooler than the valley floor, its climate contributes to more even ripening temperatures. With spur pruning by hand, precise canopy management and resultant low yields, fruit from Penny's Hill ranks with the district's very best. Total area: 17.8ha [44 acres].
GOSS CORNER VINEYARD
Immediately over the wall to the south of the cellars, Goss Corner was established in 1996 at which time it gave up more than a century of stooked golden hay to a conventional vineyard layout. It now thrives with a Shiraz, Merlot and Viognier composition. Total area: 9.7ha [24 acres]
MALPAS ROAD VINEYARD
On flat, cracking-black Bay of Biscay soils, and acquired as near-new plantings in 1993, Malpas Road Vineyard, to the immediate west of the cellars, adds consistently high quality, even-yielding Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the Penny's Hill estate mix. Total area: 15 ha [37 acres].
To ensure high quality, white grapes for Penny's Hill are sourced from nearby cool-climate Adelaide Hills, vineyards we call 'estates of mates'.
