From its first production of 141 cases of 1995 Shiraz, Penny's Hill has established a fine reputation for outstanding vineyards from which acclaimed wines have emerged. Very much a part of the recent McLaren Vale landscape, the Penny's Hill story commenced over twenty five years ago. From its beginnings on bare grazing land upon which cows and sheep had long grazed, some of the very best quality vineyards in the region now produce fine full-bodied, fruit-driven wines which are sold to loyal and appreciative wine lovers not only locally but in all discerning export markets. A cellar door and restaurant complex recognised nationally for its excellence of food and service, for its iconic location and for its direct links to the farming traditions of the greater region add to the Penny’s Hill brand authenticity.
Every step of the way, from the vineyards through the winery, we gently guide our wines to an ultimate balance of texture, complexity and interest, with quality well above price being the outcome for which we strive. Our primary varietal is Shiraz, the champion variety of McLaren Vale and it is our Shiraz wines which have excelled. From winning the region;’s Best of Show and “Bushing King” crown in 2004, Penny’s Hill has won Australia’s Best Boutique Shiraz (2005 and 2006) and in 2005 was named Australia’s Best Boutique Wine. More recently Penny’s Hill “Cracking Black” Shiraz (2010) took out Best Full Bodied Red Wine at the Sydney international Wine Show and was runner-up for Best Wine of Show.
Penny’s Hill is a James Halliday 5-star winery with nine wines scoring ratings of 90 points or more in the 2013 “Wine Companion”. Our range is “estate-grown” for reds with the whites since 2009 derived from the “estates of mates” in the nearby Adelaide Hills.
